Yankees journeyman who salvaged his career wants extension: ‘This is a place I want to be’

In picking up Luke Weaver’s option for $2.5 million, the New York Yankees made their easiest decision of the offseason. Now, their closer hopes the marriage lasts much longer than that.
In a way, the Yankees helped salvage Weaver’s career, which is to take nothing away from the work the 31-year-old right-hander put in to overcome his struggles — embracing relief and altering his pitch mix to become a dominant late-inning option. Weaver doesn’t take what he achieved in 2024 lightly, and he is not necessarily interested in exploring the market next offseason. He wants to stay with the Yankees.
